Hello,
My name is Garry Klein and I am the director of a career coaching program at a Big Ten university in what some term an "e-i-e-i-o state." As a long-time career sherpa, I have helped hundreds of students, career changers, and dual career partners to plan and ascend to execute their career plans. This blog is not about what I have done, but rather what I am thinking about as the future of work is changing at a rapid pace. I will feature articles and original content that address the most significant changes that are likely to make having a meaningful career both easier and more challenging to current and future workers. As I am a coach, I hope to also offer strategies and tips to help readers like yourself to navigate the treacherous climb that seems to be awaiting most workers today.
I believe that the job market and how statistics are reported about it are both flawed and also not reflecting what matters to most workers: job satisfaction, work/life balance, and being significant in a field/making a difference. I don't discount that for some that work is transactional, that is, it is a means to a happy life. However, I believe that for the majority of people work is part of their identity and, therefore, even though you get paid to do it, it still means that there is a high degree of personal investment in that work.
So, and because my purpose is not to preach (too much), I welcome you to read on and feel free to comment on the content. If you have questions, let me know. If you disagree with me, do it in the spirit of kindness. While it is possible I may say something that is hurtful, please know that it is not my intention. Let's proceed together upward in the spirit of mutual respect. Does that work for you? Good!
The picture below is of "The Window" an opening between two peaks of the Chisos Mountain Basin at the Big Bend National Park in west Texas. I hiked it with my buddy, Charlie Mansfield and his son, Zed many years back and, as you can see, it is beautiful. For me, it serves as a metaphor. To get there you traverse a creek between two canyons and arrive at drop-off that is breathtaking. The metaphor to me is that career paths can end abruptly (like the hike) and so, you need to be a watcher of trends, a builder of skills, and a good relationship builder to keep yourself on the trail. Windows of opportunity may open and close, but while the ability to appreciate them is important, the agility to change is crucial to your well-being.
